Learn More About Government Schemes, eShram Card Eligibility, Importance, Significance, And Other More Information

India’s economic landscape thrives on the tireless efforts of millions of unorganized workers. From street vendors and construction laborers to home-based artisans and migrant workers, this vast and diverse workforce plays a pivotal role in national development.

However, unlike their counterparts in the organized sector, these workers often lack job security and access to social security benefits like pensions and healthcare. The eShram initiative, launched by the Government of India, aims to bridge this gap and empower unorganized workers by providing them with a unique identity and a gateway to various social security schemes.

eShram Card Eligibility Guide

eShram, meaning “e-labour” in Hindi, is a national online portal designed specifically for India’s unorganized workforce. Launched in 2021 by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, eShram functions as a centralized database for registering unorganized workers across various sectors. This includes a wide range of professions within the unorganized sector, such as construction, agriculture, transportation, and home-based services.

eShram Card Eligibility

Not everyone can register on eShram. Here’s a breakdown of eligibility criteria:

  • Age: Individuals between 16 and 59 years old are eligible to register on eShram.
  • Occupation: The program specifically targets unorganized workers. This includes workers in construction, agriculture, street vending, transportation, home-based industries, and other informal sectors.
  • Existing Social Security Coverage: Individuals already registered under schemes like EPFO (Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation) or ESIC (Employees’ State Insurance Corporation) are not eligible for eShram registration. These schemes cater to the organized sector and offer similar benefits.
  • Aadhaar Card: A valid Aadhaar card is mandatory for registration. eShram leverages Aadhaar for seamless verification and eliminates the need for multiple documents.
  • Mobile Number: A mobile phone number linked to the Aadhaar card is essential for receiving OTPs (One Time Passwords) during registration and for future updates.

The Importance of eShram Registration

While an eShram card isn’t a physical document, registering on the eShram portal offers significant benefits to unorganized workers:

  • Universal Account Number (UAN): Upon registration, each worker receives a unique 12-digit UAN. This acts as a lifelong identifier for accessing various social security schemes that the government plans to roll out in the future. These schemes could encompass accident insurance, maternity benefits, pension plans, and more.
  • Enhanced Visibility: The eShram portal creates a centralized record of unorganized workers, making them visible to the government. This increased visibility can lead to better policy decisions for their welfare and potentially open doors to new employment opportunities.
  • Financial Assistance: During emergencies and national crises, the eShram database can be used to identify and provide targeted financial assistance to vulnerable unorganized workers.
  • Skilling Opportunities: The government may utilize the eShram portal to connect registered workers with skilling initiatives. This could enhance their employability and earning potential in the long run.
  • Streamlined Access to Schemes: In the future, eShram registration could simplify the process of applying for various government schemes designed to benefit unorganized workers.
